Committee of Foreign Affairs (CoFA)

In preparation for the BDA Chairmanship, the Committee of Foreign Affairs (CoFA) is shaping the public representation of the BDA - approach to developing the built environment - at the international level. The central concern is the casting of the association as arbiter of German Baukultur (directly translated, building culture). The focus is on a holistic, integrative image of the achievements of German architects, who, in addition to producing sustainable, energy-optimised, aesthetically sophisticated and technically impressive structural output also take sociocultural factors into account in their planning processes.

CoFA is conceived as a platform for information exchange for BDA architects, who, in the face of a sharply shrunken market for planning services in Germany and the opening of markets in the European Union, have an increasingly international orientation. A strong interdisciplinary network that includes the construction industry is essential for them, especially considering how small Germany's office structures are in comparison to other countries. In this spirit, CoFA seeks out and strengthens contacts to decision makers in business and politics and promotes exchange of experiences among international colleagues.

The Committee cooperates with related professional organisations (BAK/NAX, VBI) and with the ACE (Architects Council of Europe) and encourages the participation of architects on delegation trips. A cooperation with the Goethe Institute will create opportunities to bring BDA themes, projects and speakers to international events, as will a collaboration with the Federal Foreign Office, which has already borne fruit: the BDA was successfully represented by several speakers from the ranks of the Committee at the first Foreign Trade Day for Architecture and Building in February 2012.
